Born Cork 9th September 1944. Married to Marie Dorney, three daughters. Educated North Monastery CBS, Cork; Cork RTC; UCC (Diploma in Chemical Technology). Full-time Public Representative, former laboratory technologist. First elected 1981 and at each subsequent election.

Appointed Front Bench spokesperson on Environment & Local Government, June 2002. Member Joint Committee on Environment and Local Government. Front Bench spokesperson on Tourism, Sport and Recreation 1997–2001. Minister of State at the Department of Education and Environment (with special responsibility for Youth and Sport) 1994-1997. Fine Gael Front Bench spokesperson on Social Welfare 1993. Fine Gael Front Bench spokesperson on Health 1987-1988. Spokesperson on Environmental Protection 1982. Alderman, Cork City Council 1979-1995 (Lord Mayor 1988/1989). Re-elected to Cork City Council in 1999. Member of Southern Health Board 1982-1995. Former Chairman of Southern Health Advisory Board; Served on the Board of Management, North Infirmary Cork; Member of Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland; Bol Chumann na hEireann, Golfing Union of Ireland, GAA and FAI.
