Hardly any space left on the lamp posts for more posters outside the Superquinn shopping centre in Blanchardstown on what was only Day 5 of the official campaign.

Since the Dublin West By election in 1996, Tom Morrissey and Sheila Terry have swapped parties. Both experienced their first electoral success at the 1991 Locals when they were elected to Fingal County Council for Castleknock; Morrissey for Fine Gael and Terry for the Progressive Democrats.

They faced each other in the 1992 General and 1996 By elections, but then Morrissey was poached by the Progressive Democrats shortly before the 1997 General election. In the 1999 Locals both again stood in Castleknock successfully; Morrissey for his new party and Terry as a poll-topping Independent.

Since then, Sheila Terry has joined Fine Gael, to reverse the position in the 1996 By election. Pictured here in their home area of Castleknock

Two sitting TDs and two hopefuls try to attract votes in Blanchardstown. The constituency of Dublin West has seen major revisions to its boundaries, and has lost one seat to become a three seater.
