General Election Campaign 2002 for 29th Dáil

Galway West

1997 Results

2002 Results

Galway West is one of the more interesting constituencies of the 2002 campaign. The dramatic resignation of PD Bobby Molloy, shortly before the election was called, increased the possibility of seats changing hands. Molloy's resignation was followed swiftly, but apparently unrelatedly, by the announcment that former Eurovision winner and current Connaught Ulster MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon would enter the fray in Galway West.

Just for the record, Dana won the 1970 Eurovision with All kinds of everything. Twelve countries entered the Dutch-hosted competition. In a voting system that was a combination of electoral college and first-past-the-post, Ireland received a total of 32 points. The UK were runners up with 26 points - Mary Hopkins performed Knock knock - who's there? Luxembourg's David Alexandre Winter received no points for singing Je suis tombé du ceil.

Most of the country enjoyed much better weather for the second Saturday of the campaign than the storms and high winds of the first weekend. The sea front at Salthill was busy with people largely oblivious to the posters and campaigning around them.

Several of the many roundabouts on the roads approaching Galway City had this banner from Fine Gael hopeful, Fidelma Healy Eames.
