A plebiscite on the draft Constitution was held on 1st July 1937. A general election of members to Dáil Éireann took place on the same day. The total number of votes given at the plebiscite approving of the draft Constitution was 685,105 and the total number of votes not approving was 526,945. As the majority of the votes cast at the plebiscite signified approval, the draft Constitution was deemed to have been approved by the people and came into operation on 1st January 1938.
