Born Ballineen, Co. Cork, May 1943. Married to Marie Donegan, three sons, two daughters. Educated St. Finbarr's College, Farranferris, Cork and UCC (Dairy Science). Government Minister and former Dairy Manager. First elected 1977. Lost his seat 1981. Re-elected February 1982 and at each subsequent election.

Re-appointed Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development on 6th June 2002 and renamed Minister for Agriculture and Food. Minister for Agriculture and Food 1997-2002. Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry 1993-1994. Minister for Agriculture and Food 1992-1993. Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food 1987-1992. Senator 1981-1982. Member of Cork County Council 1974-1991. Member of Cork County Committee of Agriculture 1974-1988 (Chairman 1976/77 and 1985/86). Awarded Office of Legion d’Honneur Insignia by French Minister for Agriculture for his handling of the 2001 Foot and Mouth crisis.
