Seamus Pattison (Carlow Kilkenny) stands down as Ceann Comhairle, and Rory O'Hanlon (Cavan Monaghan) is elected in his place. A coalition Government is formed between Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats (88 seats), with Bertie Ahern continuing as Taoiseach and Mary Harney as Tánaiste.
