John McGinley has been a Labour Party Member of Kildare County Council since 1992. He was re-elected in the 1999 Elections and was again successful in the Elections last June, increasing his vote each time. John was a candidate in the Leixlip Electoral Area of the Council where there were 4 seats to be filled. He came second in the First Count with 1,274 votes and ended up with 1,913 votes on the sixth count when he was elected along with two others. The Leixlip Electoral Area includes the towns of Maynooth and Leixlip. The Labour Party strategy confined John''s canvassing to Maynooth in an attempt to get two Labour candidates elected. The strategy nearly came off as the second Labour candidate, Colm Purcell, lost out by only 103 votes. In the subsequent AGM of Kildare County Council John was elected as Deputy Mayor in a vote of the 25 members of the Council. John is also a Worker Director on the Board of the ESB. [2003 online] |
