European Elections

The next European Elections in the Republic of Ireland will be held on Friday 23 May 2014 on the same day as Local Elections and two Dáil by elections. European Elections are held every five years.

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) were appointed by national governments until the first direct elections were held in 1979. Ireland joined the EEC (as it was then) in 1973.
