Gerry Adams

Announced on 14 November 2010 intention to contest Louth at the forthcoming election to the 31st Dáil, resigning as an MLA and creating a vacancy in the Westminster seat of Belfast West. See this RTÉ article.

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, confirmed on 26 January 2011 that Adams had been appointed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer as Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead. As Adams is an abstentionist MP, the constitutional basis for his resignation is unusual. He remained in this position until 1 April 2011 when Peter Soulsby resigned as Leicester South MP in order to stand as Mayor of Leicester.
