Elections to 24th Seanad - April 2011BackgroundTimingA general election for Seanad Éireann must take place within 90 days of the dissolution of Dáil Éireann. The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is required to make an order within seven days of the dissolution of the Dáil with dates for the election process. The 30th Dáil was dissolved on Tuesday 1 February 2011. The latest date for holding the Seanad elections was Monday 2 May 2011 (which would have been a national holiday), and the Minister had to decide the timing by Tuesday 8 February 2011. On Monday 7 February 2011, the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Éamon Ó Cuív, announced the dates and times for the general election of members to Seanad Éireann.
